EDM is sweeping Muncie. A few years ago that may not have been the case. But thanks to a new campus collective, local venues have started filling their shows with a loyal and growing audience. I sat down with local DJ, Dimitri Putney,( aka Ventura Music) in his home studio. He described how he got his start in music and later in the Ball State Scene. Putney is a member and vice-president of the EDMC - a campus affiliated collective for young DJs looking to break into the music scene. Putney recalled how the EDMC gave him his start saying "I don't think i'd be where I am without this group. Putney played me some of his new music and offered his advice to students looking to start a music career in a college down. EDM music is only growing in popularity. EDM has taken off, and its' artists have obviously benefitted from it, Forbes recently ranked the most successful DJs. I recently sat down with EDMC president Kiefer Ian. Ian described the group to me. "Our members get a lot out of the group" said Ian "Support, feedback, constructive criticism, a learning community, a chance for exposure and to expand their brand."

But how did EDM get so popular, I talked to a professor of music at Ball State University. "It did not start as EDM per say," says Christoph Thompson "but likely has its origins in the Detroit Techno and the european Electro music of the late 70s. Since EDM has always been very technical in its production process, it is as a matter of fact one of the driving forces in the development of new effects, synthesizers, and production techniques." Equipment such as those mentioned has propelled EDM into the 21st century and allowed DJs to experiment more. Muncie's local venues have definitely benefitted from EDM's growth in popularity - especially Village staple and student-favorite, Be Here Now, "EDM Night" always brings in a steady crowd and has contributed to the EDMC's notoriety around campus.
